Hearing Talith confirm that he was trying, Cole nodded his head in an understanding fashion, taking a step back and letting the events play out however they would. From the little he’d seen of Talith already, Cole guessed that continuing to give him advice and speak with him in front of Midori would cause him more stress, and potentially bruise his ego. Cole knew that, for better or worse, giving them time to try and sort things out themselves would be far more effective than trying to back-seat resonate. To be honest, it was probably for the best. Cole had never worried about anyone’s learning aside from himself, and possibly his old partner, back when the two had a strong relationship. He imagined he would be a passable teacher, just as he’d always been at least passable at everything in his life, but without any experience or real emotional investment in those he was trying to educate, he wouldn’t be particularly effective.
Thinking back on his old partner, Cole was frankly surprised to find that he didn’t feel sad, or angry, at her decision to stay in Class One and continue on without him, rather than stoop to his level as he worked through this trying time. Their relationship had always been one of convenience, and while the two effectively resonated and bonded over their somewhat similar situations and work ethic, Cole wouldn’t necessarily say that they were ideal partners. Alexis could have been different in any number of ways, and their relationship and level of success would likely have been the same. Mostly, Cole didn’t feel anything at all when he thought about their history. He knew he would be able to work his way back up – he was sure he could, no matter how much effort it took. Not for Alexis, and not for his or her family, but for himself and his own sense of who he was. Examining the less experience potential Weapon-Meister pair in front of him, Cole continued to feel just a bit envious of their situation. Having someone around that truly wanted you as a partner, not as a stepping stone on the road to success. Cole wasn’t sure how that would feel.
Just by looking at the pair, without having to use Soul Perception or any other cheap tricks, Cole could tell that something had changed. While things weren’t necessarily stable at this point, he could tell that Talith was having some success, judging from the way he was able to better lift the Weapon and from his facial expression. Cole could tell they were communicating – of course they were – Meisters and their Weapons were always in constant communication with one another, and while they could hide thoughts and feelings from one another, an inexperience pair trying to resonate often shared stream-of-consciousness type thoughts with their partner. This actually helps to facilitate resonance a vast majority of the time, as understanding and acceptance were fundamental necessities for any prospective pair. Cole supposed that was why it wasn’t passed around as common knowledge – some students might get spooked if they knew that, for just a moment or two, they would be opening their mind as well as their soul to what might then be a stranger.
Giving the two a moment of privacy, Cole glanced to the side and watched some of the other groups attempt resonance, with varying degrees of success. While he didn’t appreciate being back in this class and relearning the same old tricks, he knew it was for the best that he move to Class Two and take time to reestablish the foundation of knowledge that had given him so much success. Maybe he could help out while he was here – he had no desire to be a teacher’s pet, but Cole could imagine it was overwhelming to have such a large number of students to attend to on a daily basis. Looking back to Midori and Talith to see if any progress had been made, Cole closed his eyes for just a moment, calming himself before opening them once more, preparing himself for his turn. If the two found success, that would take some of the pressure off – he didn’t want to make anyone feel bad. That was a strange thought. Feel bad? Since when did he start caring about that sort of thing? Shaking it off as a fluke moment of overwhelming empathy due to his unique situation, Cole yawned, trying to make sure he remained steady on his feet.
